Mary Hoffmann, Sleepy Eye Ag. Teacher, was named ACTE Region III Teacher of the Year this summer. She received this award at the Region III ACTE Conference in Des Moines, Iowa. ACTE is the Association of Career and Technical Education. ACTE is the largest national education association of thriving professionals dedicated to the advancement of education that prepares youth and adults for successful careers. Our members represent all facets of career and technical education (CTE).

I am nearly finished painting a portrait of my son, Hans. It seems to me that the portrait is not bad. Hans says that the portrait is “great.” (Please note, I do not use that word to describe that painting or any other art that I have ever attempted.) I suppose that the portrait is a decent likeness of the subject, and that is generally desirable in portraiture.

Monica (Steffl) Hertling and Charles (Chisey) Hansen, both of Sleepy Eye, are the two remaining members from their class of 20 students who graduated from Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s High School in 1942. They held their 80-year reunion at Lake Villa Maria in Sleepy Eye on Tuesday, July 19. Submitted

This month St. Mary’s Church welcomed a new priest—not only new to the parish but newly ordained. Fr. Tanner Thooft, along with Fr. Joshua Bot and Fr. Nathan Hansen, were ordained on June 28 at St. Mary’s Church.

The parks in Sleepy Eye are a source of pride for the community. With playgrounds and shelters they provide a place to simply enjoy a park outing with the kids, to a family picnic, and a place where the community gets together for celebrations.

Pope Francis has named Bishop Chad W. Zielinski, 57, the fifth bishop of the Diocese of New Ulm. The announcement was made on July 12 by Archbishop Christophe Pierre, apostolic nuncio to the United States. His installation is set for Tuesday, Sept. 27.

FFA members from throughout Region VI recently attended the Summer Ag. Tour from June 27-30. Members attended along with FFA advisors, Mary Hoffmann, Katie Emmett, and Paul Hendrickx, as well as members from the St. James, Tracy, and Mountain Lake Chapters. This was an excellent opportunity available to members.
