With just a month to go before the school year starts, the Sleepy Eye School Board had mainly quick routine items on the agenda at their July 20 meeting, finishing their business in 17 minutes. Superintendent John Cselovszki told the board that he and Facility Manager Doug Domeier met via Zoom with the Ideal Energies project manager to review the scope and sequence of the Solar Array project.
Two members of Bright Days at Sleepy Eye Adult Day Services are former students at the Minnesota State Public School for Dependent and Neglected Children, which is now the Minnesota State Public School Orphanage Museum in Owatonna. So, a ‘back to school’ summer trip was planned for the whole group.
The EDA Board meeting had a light agenda for July. The financial reports for all the EDA programs and the EDA Coordinator and Chamber Director Reports were all presented as printed.
Weelborg Chevrolet in New Ulm donated $3,000 to the Knights of Columbus Teddy Bear Drive for Ellanor Siefkes,a drive to raise money for medical expenses related to Ellanor’s bone marrow transplant and support the Siefkes family. Farmfest, at Gilfillan Estates located on Highway 67 between Morgan and Redwood Falls, is next week—Tuesday through Thursday, Aug. 2, 3 and 4.
MnDOT advises motorists to expect delays on Highways 4 and 14, in the Sleepy Eye area, beginning Monday, August 1, weather permitting, as crews apply a seal coat to protect the treated highways from the harsh Minnesota weather. (Other highways in southcentral and southwest Minnesota will also be seal coated.)
The Sleepy Eye Chamber of Commerce held the 2022 Business of the Year Appreciation Luncheon on Thursday, July 14 at the Pix, honoring First Security Bank. The Business of the Year award recognizes a Chamber member business that, among other qualifications, shows a dedication to making Sleepy Eye a better place by giving back to the community in some manner.
This month St. Mary’s Church welcomed a new priest—not only new to the parish but newly ordained. Fr. Tanner Thooft, along with Fr. Joshua Bot and Fr. Nathan Hansen, were ordained on June 28 at St. Mary’s Church.
Like a long line of Miss Sleepy Eye queens before her, Miss Sleepy Eye 2021 Leah Miller is representing Sleepy Eye in the Minneapolis Aquatennial Ambassador Candidate Program this week. After a busy week as the Stage Manager and a dancer in Sleepy Eye Community Theater’s “West Side Story,” Leah had only a couple days to catch her breath and prepare for the Aquatennial before she arrived there on Wednesday morning.
Sleepy Eye’s Party in the Park is Thursday, July 28 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Allison Park.
