September EDA update

Welcome fall! It’s the most wonderful time of the year. Before summarizing the September EDA Board Meeting, I wanted to comment on a couple of projects that recently took place or are going to take place. First, the Huey Helicopter Project. It was one of, if not the most enjoyable and satisfying projects that I have ever been involved with. Thank you to all the businesses, groups, organizations, and individuals who donated money, time, and talents to make this project the success that it was. A special thank you to Rick Mages, Doug Pelzel, and Steve Haala for spearheading the efforts. I witnessed many military veterans who were moved with emotion from the escort in Iowa to Sleepy Eye, through the ceremony that took place for the dedication of the Huey Helicopter. Thank you to ALL our military veterans! This effort was to honor all of you. There has been a renewed interest in purchasing name plates for the Memorial Wall since the dedication, and I would encourage others to place their orders now as I would like to submit the next order as soon as possible and I need a minimum of eight to order.

Happy Birthday Sleepy Eye!

News from the Chief

We have had a large increase in scam reports lately. I have written about this in the past, but it to be an issue. The best advise I can give is whenever you get an email or phone call be suspicious. Scammers are adept at seeming legitimate. They rely on looking and sounding real and putting people in an emotional state. Scammers use excitement (winning money) or fear (getting into trouble) most often to put people in a high emotional state. They don’t want people to think rationally, they want people making quick decisions based on emotion. If you get anything from an unknown person, slow down, stay calm and think any decision through. I would advise speaking with a family member, friend, financial institution, or law enforcement. A third party who is not involved in the scam can give calm advise and see the scam from the outside clearer. Scammers will often advise a victim not to talk with anyone else. This is a huge red flag, if they want to keep it a secret is not real.

Worship of God (Third Commandment)

In this commandment the LORD states: “Remember the Sabbath Day to keep it holy” (Exodus 20:8). First of all, we have to understand that God required something different of His Old Testament people in this commandment than He does His New Testament Church. In the Old Testament the required day of worship for Israel was Saturday and they were not allowed to work. It was a day of complete rest from work, set aside for the worship of the LORD (see Exodus 20:9-11). We are not bound by those two specific restrictions in the New Testament because they were connected to the ceremonial laws God gave to Israel. But that does not mean that the spirit of this commandment no longer applies to us today.
