With election day approaching, on Tuesday, Nov. 8, the Herald-Dispatch gave the candidates for Sleepy Eye City Council the opportunity to provide information to the voters. They were asked why they want to serve on the City Council and to comment on the top two or three issues the council will be or should be dealing with in the next few years.

Stay safe, fire prevention reminders

This week is Fire Prevention Week and the Sleepy Eye Fire Department has provided opportunities to learn about and consider how you can keep your household safe from fire dangers. From kindergarten students touring the fire station, to elementary students receiving fire prevention learning materials, to all students participating in fire drills, to the entire community being invited to participate in Operation E.D.I.T.H. (Exit Drill In The Home) on Wednesday evening, everyone has had the nudge to think about fire prevention.

Fire won’t wait, plan your escape

Each year since 1922, Fire Prevention Week has been observed during the week of October 9, in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire, which began on October 8, 1871, and caused devastating damage. This horrific conflagration killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures, and burned more than 2,000 acres of land. Nuvera’s Gig Cities project under construction in Sleepy Eye

For the past several weeks I’ve been curiously watching the various crews in my alley working to install Nuvera’s fiber connections to customers’ homes—from digging in the mains to boring through my yard (happening today). Anyone living in the north side of town, or driving through the neighborhoods, has surely seen the work also. I’ve been so curious that on more than a few occasions I have asked the workers to tell me what they’re doing. It finally occurred to me that some of our readers may also be curious. Nuvera provided answers to my questions for this article.
