Let me begin by saying that the Babe Ruth 100th Anniversary Celebration that took place on October 15 was a great day! Hours of family fun and baseball related activities at the ball field, and then an awesome program afterwards at the brewery with interesting speakers and performers.
For the 18th year, volunteers will gather in Sleepy Eye to package food for the hungry, through the program of Food for Kidz - Stewart, MN. As he has each year, Rick Mages is spearheading this event, with the help of fellow Knights of Columbus members and area church and school groups, which will be held on Sunday, Nov.
Tuesday, Nov. 8 is General Election Day across the United States. On the ballot for all Minnesotans are races for U.S. Representative, Governor and Lt. Governor, Secretary of State, State Auditor, Attorney General, State Senator, State Representative, and Judicial seats. Local races in Sleepy Eye include County Officials, City Councilors, and School Board Members. Some Township ballots include Township Officers.
Have you heard of the horseman?! The headless horseman?!? Get ready for a show that is sure to put you in the Harvest spirit. Travel back to 1790 and join the Sleepy Eye High School Theater for the tale of the hapless schoolteacher, Ichabod Crane, in the not so quaint village of Sleepy Hollow.
Dean Simonsen decided not to run for a third term as Brown County’s 4th district Commissioner. He is proud he was able to serve and represent his constituents.
Candidate for Governor, Scott Jensen, stopped at the Sleepy Eye Brewing Co. for a Community Meet and Greet on Oct. 24. He is pictured with Brown County Republican Chair Greg Bartz, who introduced Jensen before he spoke to a room full of hometown supporters. Jensen is a 1973 graduate of Sleepy Eye High School. Both Sleepy Eye football teams had home games on Wednesday, Oct. 19—the final games the Indians and the Knights would play on their home fields, as the Sleepy Eye United varsity football program will take to the fields next fall. (Sleepy Eye United will play two home games at each field.)

With election day approaching on Tuesday, Nov. 8, the Herald-Dispatch gave the candidates for Sleepy Eye District 84 Board of Education the opportunity to provide information to the voters. They were asked why they want to serve on the school board and to comment on the top issues the board will be or should be dealing with in the next few years.
Over the years various people have shared with me that one of their favorite stories of the Old Testament is that of David and Goliath. You are likely familiar with it yourself. It gets referenced regularly in sporting events and other “underdog” scenarios, even by people who, curiously, don’t believe the Bible. The record is found in First Samuel 17:1-58.
