The Sleepy Eye Downtown Revitalization Committee, in cooperation with the Sleepy Eye EDA, will use a $10,000 Blandin Foundation Leadership Boost Grant to continue their efforts to make residents and visitors alike feel the downtown district is a great place to be.
The Brown County Historical Society is hosting a Holiday Open House on Friday, Nov. 25, from 10 a.m.
In Brown County District Court on Oct. 31, 2022, Chad L. Zeig, formerly of Sleepy Eye, was sentenced to 45 months in prison, at the Minnesota Correctional Facility in St. Cloud, following conviction on three felony counts of possession of pornographic work involving minors; and sentenced to 48 months (stayed for 5 years) on one felony count of dissemination of pornographic work. Conditional release after confinement was set at five years.
Sixth grade student, Laylana Hoffmann, won the Sleepy Eye Lions Club Peace poster contest. This is a project of Lions clubs around the globe. Creating peace posters gives children everywhere the chance to express their visions of peace and inspire the world through art and creativity. The theme of the contest was Lead with Compassion. We have so very much to be thankful for in this 2022 year. So before I jump into the details of what is taking place with the Chamber, I would just like to say that I am so very thankful for you, our community. The numerous times you have supported the efforts of the Chamber by promoting Sleepy Eye and its businesses or just showing up at our events, means more than you could know. To you it may seem like the obvious or natural thing to do but know this, it is appreciated beyond measure and by your actions you are changing the perspective and the standards of Sleepy Eye.
Newly-elected House Minority Leader Lisa Demuth, R-Cold Spring, has appointed Rep. Paul Torkelson, R-Hanska, to serve as Deputy Minority Leader for the Minnesota House Republican Caucus. Torkelson was just elected to his eighth term and has held a number of leadership posts within the House GOP including two stints as an Assistant Minority Leader in the 2013-2014 and 2021-2022 bienniums, Assistant Majority Leader during the 20112012 biennium, and serving as Chair of the House Capital Investment (2015-2016) and Transportation Finance Committee (2017-2018). He served as the Republican Lead on the House Redistricting Committee during the 20212022 biennium.
A group of happy volunteers posed for a photo at the Food for Kidz packaging event at the Sleepy Eye Event Center on Sunday, Nov. 13. Organizers said the 150 volunteers packaged just under 72,000 meals. Monetary donations are still needed.
