Compassionate Friends to remember loved ones

The South Central Minnesota Chapter of the Compassionate Friends will observe the Annual World Wide Candle Lighting with a pot luck supper and program on Sunday, Dec. 11 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 700 South Broadway in New Ulm. The pot luck will begin at 6 p.m. At 7 p.m. candles will be lit “that their light may always shine” followed by a program of poems, readings and music.

City investment paid off

The headline is a bit of a play on words. In 2016 when the City of Sleepy Eye put together an arrangement with Ruhr Development to own, renovate and operate the hotel (now AmericInn) as part of the plan for the city’s new Sleepy Eye Event Center, the city purchased the existing hotel for $400,000. The ownership of the hotel was transferred to Sleepy Eye Lodging (Ruhr’s company created to own and operate the property) with repayment of the $400,000 due in five years. Because of the struggles of the pandemic year, the payment due date was extended a year.

News from the Chief

As we transition into winter, I would like to remind everyone about the parking ordinances in town, both on a normal day and when a snow emergency is declared. The ordinance in town is that a vehicle must move every 48 hours. To comply with the ordinance the vehicle must leave the block to have considered moved. Going out every two days and rolling it forward one foot does not satisfy the ordinance.

Family of Chief Sleepy Eye visit museum

Recently the Depot Museum welcomed a special pair of visitors. Gordon Robideaux, great-great-grandnephew of Chief Sleepy Eye, had been in contact with Debbie Joramo, museum director, to set up a time when he and his granddaughter, JoAnna Bigler would visit the museum and see the displays about Chief Sleepy Eye and on Nov. 10 they made the trip from the twin cities area where they both live.

Jensen reflects on run for governor

Dr. Scott Jensen, Republican candidate for governor, took some time out of his day on Monday for a phone conversation with the Herald-Dispatch. Asked if he was somewhat exhausted after the long campaign and eventual loss, Jensen said, “Not at all. Traveling around the state to talk with voters was a wonderful experience for Mary [his wife] and me. We enjoyed the many hours we spenttogether in the car, justtalking. The [campaign] experience was energizing.”
