“West Side Story” on stage next week

“Something’s Coming” to the stage in Sleepy Eye, buddy boys! Sleepy Eye Community Theater is proud to present the iconic musical by Stephen Sondheim and Leonard Bernstein, “West Side Story.” Featuring a cast of talented local performers, West Side Story is a modern Romeo & Juliet story set in 1950s Manhattan. It explores the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds, and the romance of Maria (played by Karina Koracan), a Puerto Rican immigrant, and Tony, (Michael Koester) former Jets’ leader.

You shall have no other Gods

There are several major fallacies in our society today regarding the existence of God. They include the belief that God does not exist (atheism), that He cannot be known (agnosticisim), or that God exists, but has no interaction with human beings (Deism). The Bible rejects all three of these beliefs.

Campground courtesy and lake care

The camping season is in full swing, and our campground has been busy most of the summer. I would like to give everyone a friendly reminder that when driving through the campground to please SLOW DOWN! There are many families with young children that use our park, and we don’t want to see any accidents. We will be installing speed bumps throughout the campground area because we have received numerous complaints about the speed of traffic through the campground. Some of you have probably already seen the new kayak and paddleboard rental station that we now have available in the campground. There is a small, sloped area by the rental station to allow renters easier access to the lake. We don’t want people dragging the kayaks and paddleboards over to the boat landing to launch them. Dragging them on the blacktop and concrete will damage the bottom of them, plus the boat landing gets very busy and we don’t want someone getting hurt by someone backing a trailer up. There has also been a new bench swing added to the south end of the beach, thanks to a donation from Lisa Hoffmann.

GFWC Woman’s Club

The GFWC Woman’s Club met June 21 for lunch at Lola’s in New Ulm with 11 members present. The guest speaker was former teacher Leah Treleven who told the group how she started her business Sweethaven Tonics. She said everything is made from scratch using fresh ingredients. She currently has six different flavors that are used to make specialty drinks and cocktails. She sells her tonics to bars, restaurants and breweries, including Schell’s and S.E. Brewing. Leah led the group on a tour of the former Herberger’s building which she rents to store her boxes, bottles, and other items needed for making her tonics.

Perspective I Suppose

Twas perspective I was looking for as the team drove into our farmyard unannounced. The long laddered truck ready to hoist the young men and their chainsaws was telltale of what was soon to go down, or rather, what must come down—depending upon your perspective.

Kayaks, paddleboards can be rented at SE Lake

A new recreation opportunity is available at Sleepy Eye Lake with the arrival of the Kayak and Paddleboard rental station last week. The equipment, which includes stand up paddleboards and single or two-person kayaks, with paddles and life vests, is in a trailer at Sportsmen’s Park Campground. The equipment is rented through the City of Sleepy Eye website in two-hour time slots. The sign on the trailer provides the website address to provide rental opportunities for those who want to rent when they are at the park.
