“Why would anyone want to do that?” That was my exact thought when little 8-year-old me asked my parents, after a Saturday evening Mass one summer’s evening, what the priest did when he was not at Mass. As good parents, wishing to inspire a sense of devotion and holiness in their young son, they had replied with, “Well, Father prays for us because we are his spiritual family.” Then, pointing to the little parish rectory, they continued, “Father lives alone in that house and gives his whole life to God and teaches us how to get to heaven.” Although they were doing their best, I am sure, to inspire me to live a holy life, I just remember being very confused and repeatedly thought “why would someone ever want to do something so boring?”
