St. Mary’s senior class enjoys fun in the sun
St. Mary’s seniors traveled to the Florida Keys on their class trip, April 2-5. They stayed at a resort in Islamorada where they swam in the ocean and the pool, soaked up the Florida sun, went bike riding and fishing, and cracked coconuts and drank coconut water. One evening they visited a marina in Islamorada and ate at beach side restaurant for a seafood buffet and celebrated Nico Nosbush’s 18th birthday.

Westphal selected as Sleepy Eye Elementary principal
Last Monday the Sleepy Eye elementary principal search committee interviewed six candidates, as listed in last week’s Herald-Dispatch.

Speech team wraps up regular season
On Saturday, March 29 the River Valley speakers competed in the Knights “Duel of the Fates” tournament in Tyler at RTR High School. This tournament was originally scheduled for earlier in the month but postponed due to weather. Though the postponement did affect the number of speakers able to attend this tournament, the River Valley speakers still worked hard and earned the first place team award.

13 FFA Members Compete in Agriscience Fair
Thirteen members of the Sleepy Eye FFA competed in the Roland Peterson Agriculture Education Science Fair held on March 13 at the University of Minnesota, St. Paul Campus. The Minnesota FFA Association uses this invitational as the Minnesota FFA’s Agriscience Fair. The highest-ranking FFA member or team of members with an agricultural project will advance to the national competition.
Community Education News
It is time to plan the summer youth brochure of activities. Offerings should be submitted to this office by April 15 in order to prepare handouts for the elementary students and secure sign-ups before the school year ends in May.

River Valley speech team’s season coming to an end
On Saturday, March 22, after having the previous weekend off due to winter weather, the River Valley Speech Team had a successful day at the Pipestone Arrows tournament. The team brought home the first-place team trophy in the large school division. Sixteen River Valley speakers made it to the final rounds with another seven students receiving blue and red ribbons of merit. Earning first-place champion honors in their categories were Abigail Jensen in prose, Leo Hovland and Lily Pingeon in duo interpretation, and Levi Johnson in storytelling. Second-place medals were earned by Taya Beyer in extemporaneous reading and Kyla Peichel in great speeches. A third-place medal was awarded to Alex Confer in prose. Fourth-place medals were awarded to Reagan Schmidt in extemporaneous reading, Ella Kottke in humorous, and Aiden Grausam in great speeches. Earning fifth-place medals were Aubree Paplow in informative speaking, Kaylee Granda in drama, and Jozie Pingeon in extemporaneous reading. The duo interpretation team of Alayna Beyer and Jazmine Robertson earned six-place medals. Blue ribbons for being one point out of finals honors were received by Noah Bredeson and Kameron Bigelow in informative speaking, Ayvah Wendt in prose, Paige Schwarzrock in humorous, and both Christina Reindl and Amaira Brown, in creative expression. Lucy Schmidt earned a red ribbon in humorous for being two points out from finals.

Sleepy Eye High School senior class travels to Florida
The SEHS senior class traveled to Orlando, Florida March 19-23. The group visited Cocoa Beach, Volcano Bay water park, Disney Springs, and the Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure theme parks.

FFA Best Informed Greenhand Team takes First at Regions
On Tuesday, March 11, the regional competition for the Best Informed Greenhand (BIG) Career Development Events (CDE) was held in Jackson.
