School Board hears legislative priorities

At their April 14 meeting the Sleepy Eye Public School Board discussed removing trees and putting in a sidewalk along School Street (the street that runs alongside the football field). Facility Manager Doug Domeier told the board that the City of Sleepy Eye is considering the rehab of the street, which had been scheduled during the last big street project but not included to cut down the total project cost. Domeier reminded the board that installing a sidewalk was discussed at that time. He also said 10 trees that are in the area where the sidewalk would go are all Ash trees and in poor condition so he recommended having them removed and also recommended the sidewalk project. No board action was taken at this time. [Per City Manager Bob Elston the School Street project is under consid- eration but not scheduled for this year.] During his report, High School Principal Shane Laffen said he expects 10 junior high students to attend summer school, along with senior high students needing credit recovery.

YES! Team learns more about benefits of recycling and composting

The Sleepy Eye YES! Team had a workshop on plastic waste recycling at the Community Center on March 30. Coach Deb Reinarts said it was a good opportunity for newer and younger members of the YES! team to educate themselves, as well as to gain more knowledge in how to educate students and staff in the schools and community. Reinarts said the workshop helped the YES! team generate ideas for activities for YES! Team action projects and community outreach—in the schools during Earth Week and at the community Party in the Park this summer.

Sleepy Eye Public School news

I am so glad to see that snow is truly melting finally and by the time this article is published we will have temperatures in the high seventies. Winter was truly rough on the schools this year. I truly don’t recall having this long of a cold spell. Seems like March treated us like early February this year. I am hoping our spring sports will be able to get into full gear and the weather cooperates for the rest of the spring. We are very fortunate that we are able to use digital days if we are unable to have school. Our staff have done a very nice job managing students remotely and ensuring that those days are actually are meaningful. The digital days also allowed us to keep the Easter break intact.
