Fischer’s Sleepy Bison Grill and Sleepy Eye Brewing Co. are joining together for a fundraiser for Linda Seifert on Friday, May 9. Linda was diagnosed with Primary Central Nervous System Lymphoma at the end of January and has been undergoing chemotherapy treatments since. This is a rare form of brain cancer, the same cancer she battled 12 years ago.
I often get asked if we are going to celebrate Holy Communion together on Easter, partly because Easter often falls on a Communion Sunday, and partly we want those who only come on Easter Sunday to receive it. It is a good question to ask, but the truth is, as a pastor, I don’t like to do communion on Easter. Not because communion during the Easter service is necessarily a bad thing. I have done it and there is nothing wrong with it, but communion is a reminder of Jesus’ death. It brings us back to the Cross on a day when we should be at the Tomb, seeing that the Tomb is open, celebrating the fact it is empty, and Jesus is alive again. Easter is about life, not death.
The Sleepy Eye Woman’s Club met at the home of Mary Gangelhoff for the April Meeting. The focus of this meeting was the environment. Patti Braulick gave an informative presentation on the River Watch Program. Patti works with school groups in the area to collect water quality data across the Minnesota River Basin in order to monitor the health of less studied waterways. One of the goals of the program is to foster a sense of responsibility for maintaining and improving local water resources that we all rely on. Club members participated in an interesting water splash activity.
