An annual spring tradition, the City of Sleepy Eye’s observance of Arbor Day by planting trees in city parks, took place on April 29. Fourth graders from St. Mary’s and Public School, along with the students from Grace Lutheran, took part in the event at Eagles Park, where hackberry and elm trees were planted. SouthPoint Financial Credit Union helped sponsor the event, giving each student a tree to plant at home. The Parks Department provided the trees and cookies and water for the kids. According to a piece in Out of the Past, this was the 43rd year Sleepy Eye participated as a Tree City USA.
