It just wasn’t meant to be for the St. Mary’s football team.
After starting off slow, the Knights rallied back but ultimately fell short in the semifinal round of the Section 3A playoffs with a 34-26 loss to Adrian Saturday afternoon.

The Knights fell behind 14-0 early after a Logan Rogers rushing touchdown and a fumble recovery, which he returned for a touchdown to give the Dragons the early lead.

But the Knights rallied back after head coach Brent Kucera lit a spark under his team.
Kodan Kosak scored from 20 yards out to begin the second quarter and cut the lead to 14-7.
After forcing a much needed three and out, the Knights got the ball back and drove down the field where Nathan Schroepfer capped off the drive with a four-yard touchdown run.

The Knights decided to go for two, but were unable to convert as Schroepfer was ruled short of the goal line.
The Dragons used a drive of their own late in the second quarter ,capped off by a 30-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Wieneke to take a 22-13 lead with just over a minute remaining in the first half.

It looked as if the Knights were going to be headed to halftime trailing by two scores, but Nick Strate, in limited action, found senior Alex Sellner in the back of the end zone on a perfect pass to close the gap to 22-19 with just 11 seconds remaining in the first half.

Momentum stayed with the Knights the second half as Alex Sellner intercepted a pass inside their own 20, to stall the Dragons’ drive.

The offensive line continued to dominate for the Knights as they marched right back down the field. On fourth and one, Kosak found a hole and was off to the races for a 27-yard touchdown run. This gave the Knights their first lead of the game at 26-22 with four minute to go in the third quarter.

It wasn’t meant to be, though, as two late Logan Rogers touch-down runs gave the Dragons a 34-26 lead with just over three minuted to go.

The Dragons missed the extra point on the second Rogers run to keep it a one possession game.
The Knights drove all they way inside the Dragons 30-yard line, but a fumble ended the drive and the Knights’ season.

Kosak rushed for a team-high 177 yards to go along with two touchdowns. Schroepfer had 51 hard fought yards on 12 carries to go along with one score.
