The Sleepy Eye 18u ASA softball team earned a split with visiting Jackson on June 23. Sleepy Eye couldn’t get the bats going in game one which resulted in an 8-1 loss. The bats came alive for Sleepy Eye in game two as they bounced back with a 9-5 win.
Jackson 8, Sleepy Eye 1
Jackson jumped out to a big lead early and never looked back. Sleepy Eye mustered just one run off nine hits. They also stranded six batters on base.
Natalie Stevens was the leader at the plate. Stevens went 3-for-3 with a double and scored the lone run for Sleepy Eye in the fourth inning. Cassie Smith went 2-for-3 as well with a pair of singles and Kalyn Haas had one hit.
Courtney Bloemke got the loss on the mound. Bloemke went the complete game giving up eight runs on eleven hits. She also struck out three.
Sleepy Eye 9, Jackson 5
Kalyn Haas would not be denied in game two. After giving up three runs in the first two innings, Haas was dominant the rest of the way. At one point she retired 14 of 15 batters between the third and sixth inning. The only batter to reach in that stretch was a catcher interference call.
Haas finished the game with six strikeouts and allowed just one earned run off of three hits.
Sleepy Eye got the bats going as well in game two, especially with two outs. All nine runs were scored with two outs. Melissa Kral got it started in the third when she knocked in the fist run of the game for Sleepy Eye. Kral did it once again with two outs in the fifth, this time driving in two runs again with two outs.
