The Sleepy Eye Police Department is using Nixle, an information sharing service that utilizes text messages and email to inform citizens of emergencies.

Chief Matt Andres explained that the police department uses Nixle to send out messages about declared snow emergencies, severe weather alerts, lost/missing children and other emergency situations that may occur.

“The service is free to citizens and easy to sign up for,” he said. To sign up to receive Nixle alerts by text a person should text 56085 to 888777. Citizens can also visit Nixle.com to sign up for email and/or text alerts as well as read more about the service

The Sleepy Eye Police Department just registered with Nixle on Feb. 3. Since that date 98 people have signed up for the alerts. Andres said, “We distribute text message alerts to 93 people in the Sleepy Eye Area. We also have 16 email accounts that our messages get sent to.

“We are pleased with these early numbers of people who have signed up for our service. We hope to gain more followers in the coming months. We have had good feedback from citizens who have our Nixle service and hope to continue to use the service to positively affect Sleepy Eye and the surrounding community,” he added.

Andres asks those with questions to feel free to call him at 507-794-3711 saying, “the more people we connect with, the more likely emergency information can reach out through our community.”
