The Sleepy Eye VFW Blue baseball team went 2-2 over the weekend at the VFW Sub-Districts in Hutchinson.

The Sleepy Eye VFW Blue baseball team went 2-2 over the weekend at the VFW Sub-Districts in Hutchinson.


Game one against the host of Hutchinson went well for Sleepy Eye. Sleepy Eye pounded out 16 hits and finished with a 10-6 opening round win. Winning pitcher went to Dylan Klein, who had four strikeouts and issued three walks, and 10 hits over seven innings. At bat, Austin Fischer went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and two runs. Behind him was Matt Mielke, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Meanwhile, Alex Bruggeman went 2-for-4 with two doubles and one RBI. Other leaders include Alex Sellner who went 2-for-3 with one RBI, Jared Beltz who went 2-for-3 with two runs, and Klein, who went 2-for-4 and had two RBI.


The second game of the tournament was a tough one for Sleepy Eye. Despite a 4-2 lead, Sleepy Eye gave up six runs to Glencoe in the sixth which was the turning point in the game as Glencoe won 8-5.


Koden Kosak had three strikeouts, four walks, and allowed eight hits and seven runs on the mound. Beltz led at the plate after going 2-for-3 with one RBI while Sam Tessmer went 2-for-3 with two doubles.


Game three was almost the opposite of game two. Sleepy Eye found itself down 5-2 before rallying in the top of the seventh and scoring four runs to grab the exciting come from behind 6-5 win. Nathan Schroepfer had one strikeout as the winning pitcher over two innings. Klein and Bruggeman had two RBI apiece to lead offensively.


Sleepy Eye had an opportunity to avenge its loss to Glencoe with a rematch against the team in the fourth game. However, Sleepy Eye couldn’t get things going offensively while Glencoe recorded multiple hits and topped Sleepy Eye 6-2. Losing pitcher went to Sellner, who had three strikeouts, one walk, and allowed 10 hits and six runs over five innings. Beltz led at bat after going 2-for-4 while Fischer went 2-for-3 with a double.


Sleepy Eye finished the sub-districts with a third place finish. Due to Glencoe forfeiting their right to the District Tournament, Sleepy Eye goes in their place. Sleepy Eye opens up the District Tournament in Mankato on July 24 with a game against Farmington at 4:30 p.m. The game will take place on the Mankato East Field.


The winner of that game will play the next day at 4 p.m., while the loser will play at 1 p.m. The tournament will continue through Saturday, while the championship will be held on Sunday at noon. The winner will move on to play at the State Tournament in Brainerd.
