John D. Manderfeld was born on August 30, 1922, in Sigel Township, Brown County to Louis C. and Annie (Berg) Manderfeld. On September 17, 1946, he was united in marriage to Cyrilla Catherine Sellner at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. He lived his entire life on the family farmstead southwest of New Ulm. He raised eight active children and made many toys such as slingshot pistols and a merry-go-round. He also was a dairy, hog and grain farmer and was involved with Cyrilla’s large poultry egg production unit. He loved to ride on his tractor (maybe to have some peace and quiet?). After he semi-retired, John kept busy supporting his wife’s many endeavors which usually involved helping others. They volunteered with Meals for Shut-Ins and traveled many places throughout the United States with friends and relatives. He really loved to play cards and enjoyed learning new games from his grandchildren. His other major pastime was reading. John was a member of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, Catholic Order of Foresters, and the AMPI Dairy Board.
