The 44 member FFA team joined over 3,300 FFA members, advisors and guests from across Minnesota to participate in the 84th Annual Minnesota State FFA Convention April 28-30.

"It was a fabulous convention," said Sleepy Eye FFA teacher Mary Hoffmann, about the FFA members excelling at the state convention. "It was great to see so many of the Sleepy Eye FFA members shine. They have worked so hard this year to achieve their personal and team goals."

The first two days of the convention, Sleepy Eye had 37 members competing in CDE competitions. These members represented Sleepy Eye FFA extremely well, with all CDE teams placing in the top 10.

In addition, many team, chapter and individual awards were earned at the state convention.

Individually, Sleepy Eye FFA President and Region VI President, Brandon Roiger, was selected to have a place on the State Officer Team as the 2013-2014 Minnesota State FFA Reporter. The selection process of the officer team involves eight rounds of competition that includes writing exercises, a speech, several one-on-one interviews, and a "round robin," which models different conversations on issues in agriculture, agricultural education and FFA. Another part of the process involves creating a 60 minute workshop and presenting 10 minutes of it. Brandon also placed fourth in the prepared public speaking competition.

Tia Cselovszki was recognized for being the Region VI Star in Agribusiness.

Sixteen members of the Sleepy Eye FFA qualified for and met the requirements to receive the Minnesota State FFA Degree. The 2013 State Degree Recipients include the following: Sam Krebsbach, Emily Kjelshus, Isaac Braun, Brady Brazle, Tia Cselovszki, Katelyn Johnson, Josh Kotten, Brandon Kral, Tiffany Ludewig, John Mangen, Matt Schroepfer, Jake Trebesch, Jenna Soukup, Kari Schumacher, Dylan Dockter and Abby Walter.

In the State Proficiency Category, placing first were Jessica Busch, Brandon Roiger, Josh Kotten, Sam Krebsbach, and Matt Schroepfer. Placing second were Brandon Kral and Brandon Roiger. Earning third place in their proficiencies were Sabrina Portner, Tia Cselovszki and Jake Trebesch.

The Sleepy Eye FFA also received Chapter awards including placing sixth for the National Chapter Award. This award focuses on three areas: Student, Chapter, and Community Development. Sleepy Eye also placed in the top 10 for the Ag. Literacy Challenge and the Service Hours Challenge, first in the Chapter Exchange of Ideas for Student Development and ended the convention in the top three for Chapter Development.

Two teams, the Soils Team and the Poultry Team won competitions, earning first place in the State. Members of the Soils Team included Matt Schroepfer (first place individual), Josh Kotten (sixth place individual), Justin Kotten (eighth place individual), and Jake Trebesch. The Poultry team, also placing first, consisted of Jamie Fischer (first place individual), Brandon Roiger (fifth place individual), Matthew Miller (sixth place individual), and Tia Cselovszki (seventh place individual). Also earning first place in her competition was Josie Schieffert, who also won the Creed Speaking Contest.

The Small Animals Team was awarded with second place. Leading the way was Jenna Soukup, placing 3rd in the state. Other members of the team included Justine Bleick, Ashley Johnson, and Tiffany Ludewig. The Dairy Foods team was awarded 3rd place. Team members included Miranda McMullen (5th place individual), Katelyn Johnson, Marisa Martinez, and Erin Kotten.

In the Dairy Handling Competition, Rebecca Rosenhammer placed third overall. Also participating in the Dairy Handling Competition was Jeni Kotten.

Receiving fifth place in their competitions were the Floriculture and Best Informed Greenhand team. The Floriculture team included Kacie Goblirsch (Eighth Place Individual), Carly Jensen, Jordyn Domeier, and Josie Schieffert. The Best Informed Greenhand team included Jacob Rossbach, Lauren Laffen, Natalie Stevens, Kolten Nienhaus, and Kyle Kjelshus.

Receiving sixth place was the Dairy Evaluation Team. Team members included Mary Rosenhammer, Sabrina Portner, Bethany Seifert, and Emily Kjelshus. Mary was the top scorer on the team. Placing tenth was the Nursery Landscape Team which consisted of Kari Schumacher, Cassidy Hacker, John Mangen, and Kaylee Hillmer. Kari earned the top position on the team.
