The Sleepy Eye FFA Chapter held its annual Crops Show, Greenhand, Parents Night Program on Monday, Nov. 5. It was a chance for the families of FFA members to get together and recognize the efforts of the chapter’s members and parents, while announcing the winners of the 2012 FFA Crops Show. The Greenhands (first-year FFA members) were also recognized. FFA members produced 557 samples of corn, soybeans, wheat, oats, hay, silage, haylage and miscellaneous crops.

The purpose of the crop show is to exhibit a sample of a crop that will be judged on appearance: uniform color and size, as well as having no defects or unwanted debris. Making a crop sample for the show involves a lot of patience and attention to detail. The longer time you spend preparing a crop sample, the more success you will have in the end. The judges for the crop show included Larry Baumgardt, Ben Seifert, Jason Cunningham, Van Cunningham, Keith Lendt and John Maas. In order that every Sleepy Eye Agriculture student has the opportunity to work with crops, some crops were donated by the Sleepy Eye FFA officers, Van Cunningham and Dick Stangler.

The junior high members who were winners of the crops show are as follows: Oats Champion, Hunter Rose; Ear Corn Champion, Natalie Sellner; Wheat Champion, Hunter Rose; Soybeans Champion, Parker Neid; Shelled Corn Champion, Natalie Sellner; and Miscellaneous Champion, Hunter Rose.

The winning members of the senior high and Forage Samples include: Ear Corn Champion, Jamie Fischer; Oats Champion, Jake Trebesch; Alfalfa Hay Champion, Austin Fischer; Wheat Champion, Sam Krebsbach; Haylage Champion, Austin Fischer; Soybeans Champion, Emily Mack; Shelled Corn Champion, Jamie Fischer; Other Hay Champion, Austin Fischer; Miscellaneous Champion, Kollin Trebesch; Corn Silage Champion, Bethany Seifert; and Other Silage Champion, Austin Fischer.

After the crop show, the crops are stored until the county and state fairs the following summer. Last year, FFA members earned more than $3,000 for their efforts from the crop samples. The Sleepy Eye FFA has won the crop show at the Minnesota State Fair for the past four years, and hopes to win it again for the fifth year in a row. This is a great accomplishment for the Sleepy Eye FFA Chapter. Overall, the crop show was a success and would not have been possible without the involvement of the community!
