Employees at Carr’s Tree Service took a day out of their busy schedule for an educational training course in climbing trees to ensure their safety.

Instructor Jon Herzog, who owns RootDown Tree Service, LLC out of Burnett, Wisc., has spent many years as a crew leader and tree climber at Hamm’s ArborCare Inc., and is an ISA Certified Arborist with a B.S. in Urban Forestry and Forest Recreation from the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point.

Jon was on hand at Sportsman’s Park to show employees of Carr’s Tree Service advanced tree climbing techniques to improve safety and efficiency using modern technology and gear.

“What I?am going to show them is much safer and less taxing on a body than the techniques tree climbers used 20 years ago,” Jon said.

Jon has been giving this course annually for Carr’s Tree Service in St. Cloud. He said because the company has seen results, Carr’s Tree Service has expanded the training to other areas of the company. This year the training was held in Sleepy Eye.
Jon explained that climbing trees is a must when work must be done in an area that is inaccessible for a bucket truck.

“Climbing trees can be better than bringing a bucket truck in for some instances,” Jon said. “A climber can get into thick canopy where a truck can’t go.”?

Employees watched as Jon first showed them how he climbs trees. Each employee then put on tree climbing gear to try the techniques Jon had shown.

Before going to Sportsman’s Park, Carr’s Tree Service employees spent the morning in classroom training.
