Nita Helget, 55, of Darfur, was injured in a roll-over vehicle accident in the early morning hours of Saturday, Nov. 6, on Highway 30 east of Darfur.
According to family member, Betsy Jensen of Sleepy Eye, Nita was following her husband, Harlan, out to his deer stand the morning the accident occurred.
The Mountain Lake Ambulance responded to the call. Nita was then transferred to Windom Area Hospital and then airlifted to Sanford Health in Sioux Falls, S.D., with a broken neck.
According to posts by Nita’s daughter, Jackie Fleisher, on a Caringbridge website, Nita underwent fusion surgery shortly after arriving at Sanford.
She has been placed on a ventilator until the swelling in her neck   decreases. She is also sedated to manage pain and help her body rest. Currently she is in the intensive care unit at Sanford.
Further tests showed no other injuries other than the two breaks in her neck. According to the Caringbridge website, Nita is able to move all of her extremities. She had been wearing her seat belt at the time of the accident.
As of Sunday, a Caringbridge post said that Nita had developed a case of pneumonia, but the doctor’s had been prepared for this. She was placed on antibiotics and continues to move forward with her recovery.
While restrictions for visitors at the hospital have been lifted, the family is requesting minimal visitation to help Nita rest.
In a post on Saturday the family wrote, “We are so blessed to have the family and friendship we have in all our lives. We thank everyone for all of your thoughts, prayers and support. But the family has decided, for the time being, that it is best for Nita’s rest and recovery to pray and think of her each and every day and keep the visits low, at least for a few days, to allow her to get strong and get her out of the ICU.
“It is a very difficult thing to request this of her loving, caring, family and friends, but it is for the best for Nita and we all know that is what she needs.”
