On Wednesday afternoon of last week, it was First Security Bank’s chance to award students with scholarships and give them a little extra help with college.


On Wednesday afternoon of last week, it was First Security Bank’s chance to award students with scholarships and give them a little extra help with college.

“Anything we could do to give the young folks a little push, that is what we decided to do,” said Lloyd Amundson, owner of First Security Bank in Sleepy Eye.

In 2011 Amundson has given out 230 scholarships to students in communities where he owns a bank, adding up to $253,000.
Students each received $1,000 scholarships that would be split between their first two semesters at school.

Students were also welcome to apply for these scholarships during their second year of college.

Locally, the scholarship recipients were: George Hirschboeck, Madeline Schmitz, William Schumacher, Alan Huiras, Amanda Neidecker, Kahley Pelzel, Laura Rosenhammer, Kimberly Schumacher, Lisa Seidl, Rebeccah Ahlrich, Abigail Krzmarzick, Kyle Krzmarzick, Teri LaCourse, Mitchel Laffen, Alexa Mangen, Nathan Miller, Joe Moldaschel, Clay Schewe, Samantha Sellner, Joseph Berdan, Ashten Fleck, Megan Gilliland, Clint Haala, Marci Hertling, Nathan Kral, Matthew Krambeer, Allison Nord, Boston Portner and Samantha Seidl.

Since the scholarship began in 1993, 3,742 students have been awarded a total of $3,721,250.
