The St. Mary’s girls basketball team traveled to Nicollet Tuesday night for the opening round of the Section 2A Tournament. The fourth seeded Raiders held serve on the fifth seeded Knights, winning 57-41.
Both teams got off to a slow start but with the score 24-22, Nicollet went on an 11-2 run to close out the first half.
The Raiders came out strong in the second half and managed to hit their free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.
“We knew going in we had to play a good game,” said coach Bruce Woitas. “Nicollet is a good team with good balance.”
“We had too many unforced errors that hurt us,” explained Woitas.
Anna Surprenant and Liz Tauer led the offense with nine points each. Surprenant also grabbed 10 rebounds.
Seniors Sam Seidl, Alyssa Schroepfer and Leah Lax finished their careers with eight, six and five points respectively. Seidl added 11 rebounds.
St. Mary’s ends their year with an 8-17 mark.
