50 years ago – Oct. 1, 1974
If you had trouble keeping a steady television picture during the Vikings-Bears game Sunday, you weren’t alone. Ben Groebner, Superintendent of City Utilities, said it came about when a 69,000 volt lead wire on the NSP line at the REA substation at Franklin became loose. The line apparently dangled in the strong wind and every time it touched another object the power went out.
Keith Haas bagged a 275-pound black bear last week while hunting with his brother Curt at the base of Carlton Peak, near Tofte in northern Minnesota.
30 years ago – Oct. 6, 1994
Wayne Novotny, Harry Windschitl, and Kevin Murphy voted down a motion to approve a land development that would have created 11 new lots in Sleepy Eye. [Landowners] Marilyn and Darwin Burda of Prior Lake have been working on developing the Sleepy Hollow addition for a long time.
After depressing results of the last two growing seasons, Manager Kerm Love at Del Monte Corporation couldn’t be more pleased with this year’s sweet corn pack, which officially wrapped up Sept. 29. “We had unusually high yields right up to the end,” said Love.
20 years ago – Oct. 7, 2004
Chris Ibberson, son of Lee and Bev Ibberson, and Steph Krzmarzick, daughter of Dennis and Diane Krzmarzick, were crowned St. Mary’s 2014 Homecoming royalty Sept. 29.
