50 years ago – August 22, 1974

Several skydivers from the Minnesota Skydivers Club will be a featured attraction at the annual Jaycee-sponsored flight breakfast Sunday. “It should be an interesting show,” said Dennis Hoffrogge, who with Bob Preston is co-chairman of the event.

35 years ago – August 24, 1989

Tillie Seidl was honored as Brown County’s outstanding senior citizen woman of 1989 at the Brown County Fair. [among other volunteer activities] Tillie has served with the Sleepy Eye Care Center Auxiliary, as well as the Divine Providence Auxiliary. She is also an active member of the Sleepy Eye Depot Preservation Project.

New York Life Insurance Company has expanded to Sleepy Eye and Robin Havemeier, who recently earned her license, is the local agent for the well-known insurance company.

20 years ago – August 24, 2004

A community celebration was held Aug. 18 at the Depot Museum in recognition of Amanda Spaeth, who was selected as one of the Minneapolis Aquatennial princesses for 2005.

A photo of Bethany Seifert with a calf, taken by her brother Ben Seifert two years ago, was featured on the August cover of Dairy World magazine. Ben also entered the photo in the Brown County Fair and the State Fair. He earned purple ribbons at both events.

10 years ago – August 21, 2014

Sleepy Eye’s annual Buttered Corn Days kicked off Friday with the traditional corn eating contest. This year’s rivalry was between Del Monte (Amy Kral and Jason Krenz) and Schweiss Meats (Cody Berkner and Logan Schweiss). With only one ear of corn separating the winners, Del Monte came away as champions again this year.

Andrew Bach, St. Mary’s new High School Principal, is replacing retired principal Jerry Neubauer. It was announced in February that he would become principal. In 2011 Bach was hired as a social studies teacher after graduation from St. John’s University.
