60 years ago – July 30, 1964
Four Sleepy Eye boys attended the National Boy Scouts jamboree at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania: Bill Joe, Jim Berkner, Jerry Beech, and James Foster. One of the highlights of the program was an address by President Lyndon Johnson who spoke on the problems that face this generation.
Workmen began installation of a new front in the building until recently occupied by Raforth’s children’s shop on West Main. Attorney E.A. Hauser purchased the building and will move his law office to that location. Municipal Judge Willard Hauser will also be located in the new quarters.
45 years ago – August 2, 1979
At least 345 trees have been marked for Dutch Elm Disease this year, according to street superintendent Cliff Sorensen, who estimates the total to reach 600 by the end of the year. Sorensen said they plan to start taking the trees down sometime in August.
The “Dixieland Band” will be playing for the 12th annual Luau at the Golf Course Aug. 9. The band is composed of Peter Blackstad, Warren Sandmann, Eric Nazarenus, Todd Breiholz, Doug Rossbach and Jeff Currant. On hand to give you a “Luau” greeting will be Pedro Gallardo, an AFS student from Chile. He will spend the school year with the Rex Beech family.
30 years ago – July 28, 1994
When the call came in that an explosion had occurred at Advertising Unlimited, Inc. of Sleepy Eye, members of the Sleepy Eye Ambulance crew were not aware it was only a drill. “No one knew about it but three organizers,” said Shari Hittesdorf, ambulance coordinator. “The purpose is to learn from it.”
The Sleepy Eye Area Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that “Sleepy Eye, A History of Sleepy Eye, Minnesota” by Elizabeth Scobie has been reprinted and is now available. On Thursday, July 28, Scobie will sign books at a reception hosted by the Chamber in the lobby of Divine Providence Community Home.

Monday, Sleepy Eye residents had the opportunity to meet the new Sleepy Eye Schools’ Superintendent John Cselovszki and his family: wife Becky and daughters Cassie, Tia, and McKenzie. The family is looking forward to moving to Sleepy Eye and making it their new home.
Sleepy Eye Floral & Design has a new owner. New owner, Karen Dauer, who was the manager of the flower shop, has purchased the business from Mark Beito.
