60 years ago – May 26, 1964

John Johnson, son of Lawrence Johnson of Waseca, and Marjorie Schnobrich, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Schobrich, 617 North Fourth, have been announced as co-valedictorians of the graduating class of St. Mary’s high school. Both have a 4.0 average.

A three-day summer festival to be known as “Ish-Tak-Ha-Ba Days” will be held in Sleepy Eye June 12, 14 and 14. It will be sponsored by the American Legion. Here for the celebration will be the Al Brown shows which played in Sleepy Eye when the city celebrated its nintieth jubilee. There will be 14 rides and 30 concessions.

45 years ago – May 24, 1979

Sleepy Eye School Board and its teachers have arrived at a master agreement for the 1979-81 school years. Teachers will get a 7.83 percent salary increase for the first year of the contract and a 6.6 percent increase the second year, according the Superintendent Harold Kirchgasler. Music teacher Jim Siewert and science teacher Cliff Anderson negotiated for the education association. Their board counterparts were Joan Rosenhammer and Dr. Carroll Galvin.

Starting next week, the Sleepy Eye Herald-Dispatch will be published once a week, on Wednesdays. The change ends 29 years of semi-weekly publications for the paper. The Brown County Reminder, a free shopping guide, begins publication June 4 and will be published every Monday.

30 years ago – May 26, 1994

The fire that completely destroyed the main building and an attached storage area at Brown County Ag Services (BCA) on May 12 has not destroyed the optimism of plant officials. “I’ve already contacted construction firms. Our new building is definitely going to be a state-of-the-art facility,” said Plant Manager Dean Christensen. “We would like to be operational by Sept. 1.”

Jay Van Sickle is looking forward to becoming involved in the Sleepy Eye community. Van Sickle joined O’Hare-Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye, as its new manager. Jay said he plans to get involved in various community organizations and is thrilled to live in a small community like Sleepy Eye. “It means a lot. We’re excited to be here.”

15 years ago – May 21, 2009

An arrest warrant has been issued for Colleen Hauser of Sleepy Eye after she and her son, Danny, failed to appear in Brown County Court on Tuesday as ordered for a hearing regarding Danny’s medical treatment. Judge Rodenberg also ordered Danny be placed in protective custody once he is found so that he can receive proper medical treatment for Hodgkins Lymphoma.

St. Mary’s students, senior Kim Braulick, and sophomores Katherine Joyce and Isaiah Butler, took part in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair held last week in Reno, Nev. Katherine and Isaiah presented their team project, “First Impressions: What Triggers Our Perceptions,” while Kim showcased her project, “The Effectiveness of Enzyme Treatment on Protein Fibers: Focusing on Dye Ability and Tensile Strength.”
