60 years ago – May 12, 1964
A twister Friday afternoon uprooted trees and caused damage to buildings on the Albert W. Schroepfer farm, eight miles southeast of Sleepy Eye. It apparently was a freak storm, since no other damage was reported in the immediate vicinity. Neighbors said they noticed no wind at the time the storm struck the Schoepfer farm yard.
Nancy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Fering, West Maple, was one of two Minnesotans who won top awards at the international science fair in Baltimore last week. Nancy received fourth award plus a $25 wish award with her exhibit, “Dreaming Habits of High School Students.” Nancy is a junior at Sleepy Eye High School.
45 years ago – May 10, 1979
Cool, wet weather is delaying this spring’s pea planting for Del Monte’s growers, according to Bob Breiholz, field superintendent. “We’ve planted less than half our acres, he said. “But we can’t catch up by planting a lot more peas later. We can’t gain back the growing season we’ve lost.”
The weather outside recently may not have had you thinking about swimming, but preparations are being made for a tentative opening date of June 2 at Sleepy Eye Municipal Swimming Pool. City employees Chuck Forster, Donald Remus, and Terrence Krambeer have been cleaning the pool this week.
30 years ago – May 12, 1994
If you missed your opportunity to purchase one of 50 Chief Sleepy Eye statues, now is your chance. The Sleepy Eye Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has decided to raffle off its statue in an effort to raise the money needed to finish the Wooldrik Park project. Raffle tickets are $10 and the winning ticket will be drawn during the Fourth of July Celebration.
Joining the Sleepy Eye Public Utilities Commission for the first time Tuesday was newly appointed commissioner Dave Haala, who was appointed by Mayor Jim Broich at the city council meeting May 3. “There’s a lot of important issues facing the PUC right now,” Haala said. “They need to be looked at in a very open-minded way.”

Mayma Ramon of Mayma’s Kitchen downtown Sleepy Eye, sponsored festivities to celebrate Cinco de Mayo Tuesday, May 5. Activities included a pinata for children and music and dancing.
Stories have circulated this week as to just how long the red heart on Linus’s hand and Snoopy’s nose have been missing. Some say a week or two, others say they have been missing since last fall. Either way, Linus, Snoopy and Mayor Jim Broich would like them returned. A $100 reward is being offered for information or the parts being returned.
