50 years ago – May 2, 1974
The Sleepy Eye City Council Tuesday evening okayed plans for a new fire station, looked at a model of the proposed structure and decided to call for bids about July 9. The station will be built on property now occupied by the Ebenhoh Company. Ebenhohs will build at a location directly north of town on Highway 4.
At least 62 units will be entered in the parade Sunday afternoon in conjunction with the Second District VFW conclave here in Sleepy Eye. The parade will have a patriotic theme with numerous flags and marching units. Sleepy Eye business places and homes are asked to display the flag Saturday and Sunday.
35 years ago – May 4, 1989
Adding to the magic of Prom 1989, three couples arrived in style Saturday night at the Public School. The young men reserved a limo and kept it a secret from the ladies until it arrived to pick them up. The students enjoying the limo ride were Brad Sellner, Bryan Logue, Dan Lochner, Jenny Mickelson, Kathy Erickson, and Amy Lax.
Providing rural homes and farms with electricity for more than 41 years, Tom Klein has chosen the retirement route. Klein began working with the Brown County REA on March 1, 1948. Klein said he came out of World War II and worked at Del Monte for awhile. “A neighbor worked at REA so that’s how I got started,” he said.

The Sleepy Eye Fire Department recognized former fire chief Bob Zinniel and firefighter Steve Hillesheim for their service during the annual pork chop feed Sunday evening at the fire hall. Zinniel served 36 years, 16 as chief. Hillesheim served 31 years, many as a trustee.
The Inquiring Photographer asked “What would be your ideal Mother’s Day?” Brett Braulick said, “Take my mother for a walk along the beach and tell her how much I appreciate her.”

The top headline: “City Manager Kelli Truver resigns after only two months on the job.” The city released the following statement: The City and Truver executed a Separation and Release Agreement…The City and Kelli Truver felt it was in the best interest of each party that Truver amicably separate from employment… The action came following a complaint against Truver by a city employee.
Lions Club Students of the Month were Sleepy Eye High School senior Nathan Walter and St. Mary’s High School senior Alexa Owens.
