On Election Day, Sleepy Eye High School participated in Minnesota Students Voting, a statewide mock election program offered by the Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State and the YMCA Center for Youth Voice. Social Studies teacher Kevin Schneider said the vote totals would be sent to the YMCA Voting Outreach Director to be included in the statewide results. SEHS students voted for state and national offices, choosing the Republican candidates with about 100 votes versus 65 for DFL candidates. In the races for U.S. District 1 Representative and for Minnesota Governor, the students cast about 40 votes for candidates of the two parties advocating legalization of marijuana, reducing their support for DFL candidates by the same amount.
