She was born on June 30, 1925, on a farm in Johnstown (Rock County) Wisconsin to Theodore and Lena (Nass) Hasse. She was the fifth of six children. She was brought into God’s family through baptism on July 26, 1925 in Richmond, Wisconsin, and confirmed in her faith on November 24, 1940, also in Richmond. She graduated from high school in June of 1944 in Janesville, Wisconsin. She then moved to Milwaukee where she worked in a nursery at a children’s orphanage and did secretarial work for Mount Calvary Lutheran Church. A cousin set her up on a blind date with someone she had known growing up and the rest is history! She was united in marriage to Alvin Harold Maasz on November 27, 1954. Their 66 years of marriage were blessed with four children: Janet (Mike)Crabtree of Sleepy Eye, MN, Jane Maasz of Chandler, AZ, Kristine (Marcus)Flygare of North Mankato, MN and Paul (Judy) Maasz of Sleepy Eye, MN. She grew up and lived in Wisconsin until moving with her husband and children to a farm near Sleepy Eye in 1973. She enjoyed being a full time homemaker and mother. S pending time with her family and grandchildren was always a bright spot in her day! Never one to “sit” she spent a good share of her time outside walking, gardening, helping with the dairy herd and other farm chores. Inside would find her sewing and making sure everyone was well fed! In later years, she often could be found visiting and bringing cheer to those who were not able to get out and about. She was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye and a member of their Ladies Aid where she served in several capacities. In past months she enjoyed her time with friends at Ross Park and the Volunteers of America Group, as well as the caregivers from Leading Choice. Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin, parents and five siblings. She is survived by her four children, twelve grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
