Sleepy Eye Public School students returned to the school building on Monday, August 18, sharing all the great summer adventures with their friends. Yes, it is once again back to school time. Kindergarten started with two days of parent-teacher meetings and their first day of school on August 20. On the high school side, 7th graders reported Monday to go through their big transition day to the high school and the rest of the 8-12 graders reported to school on Tuesday.

The Sleepy Eye City Council discussed the fence ordinance in the city code at their meeting on Aug. 12. The first reading was called for on amending the fence ordinance to change required setbacks on corner lots and on adjoining lots. City Attorney Alissa Groen also suggested a more detailed description of what constitutes a fence. The council asked her to research what other cities and the League of Cities have in their fence ordinances. She will bring the information to the next meeting when a second reading could be considered.
The Sleepy Eye Public school board approved long-term facility maintenance funds during their Aug 13 meeting. The additional $2.5 million in bonded dollars will be reflected in the district’s levy and will cover repairs for the sections of the public school’s roof that have reached their life expectancy.
It is with great enthusiasm that the Minnesota FFA Adult Board of Directors announces the hiring of Mrs. Mary Hoffmann as the new Executive Director of the Minnesota FFA Association. Hoffmann assumed the role on August 18. Hoffmann brings three decades of experience in Agricultural Education and FFA, as well as immense passion and leadership to our organization. We are excited about the future of Minnesota FFA under her guidance.
Considering the staggering number of moving parts that are involved in planning a town event as big as Sleepy Eye’s Summerfest, it seems incredible when neither heat nor humidity nor sudden showers can derail what can only be described as a hog-gone good time.
The final Yard of the Month for this summer is the yard of Mike and Amy Mages.
In the words of Ricky Bobby, Jason Braun likes to go fast. And if nine national titles is any proof, he is very good at it.
