Tomorrow is August…wait, that can’t be right. I just looked at the calendar and yes, tomorrow is August. We are hours away from the full “back to school” season. This means that confirmation, TREK (formally known as Wednesday School), and more will be beginning at Trinity in a matter of weeks.

Junior Legion wins way out of elimination bracket

After Springfield defeated Sleepy Eye on Monday, July 21 to send them to the elimination bracket of the Jr. Legion Sub-State tournament, Sleepy Eye came back to win the next three games, against Luverne, Windom and Slayton, setting up another game against Springfield on Monday, July 28, played in Springfield. This was another win for Sleepy Eye, 5-4, which set them up for another game with Springfield on Tuesday evening (after deadline), in Sleepy Eye, to determine the champion of the American Jr. Legion Division II Southwest Sub-State — and the team who would advance to the state tournament.

Recent close calls highlight electric scooter safety concerns

Safety concerns regarding electric scooters have risen, according to the Sleepy Eye Police Department. In addition to privately owned scooters, Levy Electric scooters were made available to rent at Sportsmen’s Park in 2023 and can be used by anyone with a smartphone. Police Chief Matt Andres said that the department receives multiple calls per week from citizens reporting unsafe scooter activity.

Sleepy Eye student plans Farm Safety event

Eighth-grader Kylie Fischer hosted the town’s first Grain Bin and Farm Safety event at the Sleepy Eye Arena on Wednesday evening, July 23. The event, which was open to all first responders and farmers, offered a free meal provided by the Dawg House and featured demonstrations by Safety and Security Consultation Specialists, LLC (a Minnesota Lake company) and the Sleepy Eye and Gibbon fire departments.
