Two weeks from now, on March 5th, we begin Lent in the Catholic Church. Ash Wednesday begins with the invitation of conversion - an internal renewal, to dedicate extra attention and time to our prayer life. We offer penance or sacrifices to amend our personal life and relationship with God. The Catholic Church gives us forty days to contemplate our own souls and our journey in this world and to the next life.
At Sleepy Eye Elementary School we are excited to share some of the proactive steps we’re taking to help our students reach their full reading potential. With a clear focus on the legislative requirements of the Read Act, we are working hard to refine our intervention processes to better support students in closing gaps in reading and ensuring they meet grade-level expectations.
The Region VI FFA interviews were held on Tuesday, Feb. 11 for State Degrees, Region Star Awards, Proficiencies, and Region Office.
The Sleepy Eye Public School school board meeting was held on Wednesday, Feb. 12. SEPS draft 2026 budget was presented to the board by Amanda Boomgarden, she made the budget reflecting an ADM of 504 which is down 16 from the current year’s budget and the 2% basic education inflation factor for 2026. Boomgraden has calculated the projected revenue at $8,390,275 and the projected expenditure at $8,999,231. Key points to the projection she presented were local revenue anticipating an increase with the shared superintendent agreement with Cedar Mounting Schools and an increase of the Rural Education Achievement Program (REAP), which the district knows will increase by $4,116. Key points of the expenditure projection were plans to accommodate hiring an elementary school principal which would increase the expenditures, regular instruction will see a decrease due to a reduction of one teaching position and removal of one-time curriculum expense of $100,000.
Alexandria Technical & Community College announced Jaci Domeier of Sleepy Eye was named to the Dean’s List for achieving a GPA of 3.5 or higher for Fall Semester 2024.
A late-season bout with the flu almost ended Chloe Walter’s gymnastics season prematurely. The St. Mary’s senior wanted to cap her high school career with a trip to state, but with a week to go before the Section 3A meet, she was still down with influenza A.
Anna Pollard had to be persistent about it, but she eventually convinced her parents she was serious about wrestling by the sixth grade. By then, she had grown up around the sport, carried along since she was a baby to her brother Wyatt’s tournaments.
