Checks drawn on elderly woman’s account lead to criminal charges

A Sleepy Eye man has been charged with three felonies, including financial exploitation of a vulnerable adult, in a case alleging theft of more than $1,000 through the issuance of several checks against the account of an 87-year-old woman, to whom he served as pastor.The defendant, 66-year-old Jose Antonio Alvarez Contreras, said when reached at his home on Main Street East that he was wrongly accused and could show through records and video that he did not break the law in his dealings with the alleged victim.Sleepy Eye Police were alerted to suspicions surrounding Contreras in August by the Minnesota Adult Abuse Reporting Center, which identified him as a pastor and said an elderly woman in Sleepy Eye had written out multiple checks to him in July totaling about $5,000, according to a complaint filed in Brown County District Court.In an ensuing investigation, Inv.
