School lunch complaints draw apology, response

Complaints from students and parents about the quality and serving sizes of meals at Sleepy Eye Public School elicited an apology from the cafeteria vendor’s executive chef, more training for its local staff and a visit from a health inspector last week. The inspection by Brown-Nicollet Environmental Health found no violations, but a corporate chef from Taher, the company on contract to provide the food service, told a parent in an online message that he was at the school for several days last week to correct any missteps and was working to make things “much, MUCH better.”“I am really sad, disappointed, and frustrated that this happened and want to ensure that this doesnt happen ever again,” wrote Tommy Hearn, the visiting chef from Taher.Hearn encouraged the parent to keep him apprised of the situation after he leaves town, writing: “Thank you for caring about these kiddos as much as I do!”The action was prompted by a collection of complaints that were sent on April 1 to state education officials and Taher.
