Sleepy Eye Lions Club members took a few minutes during their annual waffle fundraiser Sunday to recognize the “heart beat” of their group – Russ Sorensen – with the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award, the organization’s highest honor, for his decades of humanitarian service.Sorensen, a Lion’s member since 1980, has chaired the waffle feed and its predecessor, the pancake breakfast at the Orchid Inn, since the event’s inception more than 40 years ago, Tom Larson told the crowd at the Sleepy Eye Public School cafeteria.“I guarantee you that you’ve always seen the same face at the door, greeting you and collecting money,” Larson said.Sorensen has also served as the group’s treasurer for more than three decades and is in charge of collecting old glasses for people in developing countries, among his many other Lions duties.

The Sleepy Eye Fire Department responded to a house fire east of town Monday afternoon.The blaze on Hillcrest Drive began as a chimney fire and spread to the attic, requiring firefighters to cut into the roof to keep flames from spreading further, Fire Chief Aaron Schauman said.Firefighters received the call at 2:42 p.m.
