SEPS board briefed on intervention program, mascot, parent-teacher conferences

Sleepy Eye High School will consider changing to an appointment-style format for its parent-teacher conferences in hopes of reaching more parents of struggling students.“The teachers are saying they’re really not seeing the parents that they feel they need to see,” Principal Shane Laffen told board members last week regarding the conferences held last month.

Sign ’em up

Three local high schoolers signed letters of intent last week to play college sports: Brea Mertz for basketball at Briar Cliff University in Iowa; Kadence Hesse for basketball at Southwest Minnesota State University; and Alexa Pelzel for softball at Minnesota West Community and Technical College.The girls all have their senior seasons left to play in town.

Running back Jon Petermann took offensive MVP and Special Teamer of the Year honors and defensive back Austin Uecker was named defensive MVP at the Sleepy Eye United football awards banquet Sunday.Evan Thompson was named Lineman of the Year, sophomore Jack Windschitl received Rookie of the Year honors and Brandon Braulick earned Most Improved for the 8-3 team in its inaugural season.Talan Helget received the Schweiss Meats Play of the Year for his game-ending interception in the end zone against Springfield during Sleepy Eye Public’s Homecoming weekend.
