EDA March update

The March EDA Board meeting was a planned extended meeting due to numerous topics of importance and the need for extra discussion time. The Board heard a presentation from Little Sprouts Learning Center representative Cody Groen and some of the other LSLC Board Members. Cody explained the status of the center as well as plans for the future of the childcare facility.

Poppy’s owner jailed in Sibley County

Dane Allen Burton, owner of Poppy’s Bar and Play on the Railway in Sleepy Eye, who was charged in Brown County District Court with one felony count of theft and one felony count of unauthorized possession of gambling equipment (relating to the Sleepy Eye Arena Association’s pull tab and e-tab property and money), as reported in last week’s Herald-Dispatch, is currently (as of April 11) in custody in the Sibley County Jail. He is jailed on one misdemeanor count of Violation of Order for Protection and five misdemeanor counts of Domestic Abuse-Violation of Order for Protection, along with one felony county of Obstruct Legal Process (related to the circumstances of his arrest.)

Easter Egg Hunt is Saturday

The Sleepy Eye Easter Egg Hunt, sponsored by Sleepy Eye Medical Center and SouthPoint Financial Credit Union, is scheduled to take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 8 at the Sleepy Eye Event Center. Hunters are encouraged to bring a basket/ bag and arrive a few minutes early in order to find their designated age group—0-4, 5-7, or 8 and up.

Mayor’s Message

A lot of discussion these last couple weeks centers on the City’s role in providing child care. That role is one cities around the state are wrestling with as the need seems to be on the increase. It appears that more and more home child care businesses are abandoning the service due to increased regulations and aging providers. We’ve been told that several of our community providers are planning to retire in the not too far distant future.

Students tour Highwater Ethanol

Twenty-three 10th and 11th grade students from Sleepy Eye High School’s crop science class toured Highwater Ethanol in rural Lamberton on March 22 to learn about renewable fuel production. During the tour, the students learned about the various stages in ethanol production such as incoming grain grading, grain handling, fermentation, grain storage, ethanol storage and shipment and dried distillers grains production and shipment.
