Knights advance in playoffs, Walter scores 1,000th point

The 1-seed Knights boys basketball team entered Section 2A North Subsection playoffs with a home game against 9-seed Mayer Lutheran on Tuesday, March 9. It was a rematch of the Knights final regular season game, when they traveled to Mayer Lutheran on Feb. 20 and defeated the Crusaders by 6 points. In this home playoff game, the Knights increased that spread, winning by 15 points. To top it off, Knights’ junior Will Walter scored his 1,000th career point in the win.

Lady Knights defeat Springfield

The Lady Knights won over Springfield in their Section 2A South Subsection quarterfinal game on Thursday, March 2 at St. Peter High School. It was Sleepy Eye night as the Indians played the following game, defeating Mt. Lake Area. The two wins set the Knights and Indians up for the Subsection Championship game Monday.

Indians season ends with heartbreaking 2 point loss

The Indians boys basketball team entered Section 2A North Subsection playoffs as the 8-seed, hosting 9-seed Mayer Lutheran on Friday, March 3. Mayer had size over Sleepy Eye, but the Indians’ grit covered the distance that their size didn’t. Trailing a couple points throughout the game, the Indians took a few fouls at the end and Mayer made their free throws for the slim-win.

Season over for Eagles boys hockey team

The New Ulm Area Eagles boys hockey team, the 1-seed in Section 3A met up against 2-seed Luverne in the Section Championship game on Wednesday, March 1, at Gustavus Adolphus College. After defeating Luverne in their two previous games this season, the Eagles came up short this time with Luverne getting the 4-2 win and a trip to the state tournament. SEHS junior Austin Uecker got one assist in the loss.

WILLIAM LEO ZILKA William Leo Zilka, 80, of Sleepy Eye was called home by God on March 3, 2023. Bill was born on February 1, 1943, in Little Falls, the second of Dorothy and Simon Zilka’s 13 children.

Robert Alfred Beech (Bob), entrepreneur, mechanical engineer, loving husband, father and all around wonderfully kind and fun guy, passed away peacefully on February 10, 2023, after living a long life of 97 and 1/2 years. Laughter was his gift.

BRUCE ROBERT BIRKEMEYER

Bruce Robert Birkemeyer, 80, of Mankato died on Sunday, February 26, 2023, at Hillcrest Health Care Center. Memorial Service will be held on Friday, March 31, 2023, at 12 p.m. at Northview-North Mankato Mortuary. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at Northview. Burial will be at a later date at Minneopa Cemetery. Bruce was born on June 3, 1942, in Sleepy Eye to Earl and Ruth (Sandman) Birkemeyer. He graduated from Morgan High School and Mankato State University.
