I am sitting in my office preparing for this [Jan. 29] Sunday’s sermon and the Gospel text is Matthew 5:1-12, The Beatitudes. You know The Beatitudes, the sermon where Jesus, just after calling his disciples to follow him in chapter 4, in chapter 5 introduces them to God’s way of thinking and the message they will be proclaiming from now on. The Beatitudes were taught just after Jesus proclaimed to everyone that the Kingdom of God is Near (Ch.4). With Jesus on the scene, he is telling everyone the prophesy of Isaiah has been fulfilled, the time of waiting is over, the Messiah is here, there is a new sheriff in town! Does anyone notice that God has arrived?
