Retirement, ownership change for Sturm Funeral Homes

2023 will bring exciting changes in the lives of the owners of Sturm Funeral Homes — Jay Van Sickle and Justin Asmus. On Dec. 30, Van Sickle will officially retire and sell his ownership of the business to Justin and Jennifer Asmus. Van Sickle has been with Sturm Funeral Homes since 1994 when he moved to Sleepy Eye to manage the funeral home. Justin Asmus joined the funeral home in 2000 in Springfield after completing his education at the University of Minnesota. Van Sickle and Asmus purchased six funeral homes, including Sleepy Eye, Springfield, St. James, Mt. Lake, Comfrey, and Lamberton, from Ron and Sharon Sturm in 2004. In 2009, they acquired and merged Pease Funeral Home in St. James and in 2011, they purchased Pilgrim Funeral Home in Madelia.

There is a sense of relief and anticipation to get back to “normal life.”
