It’s a tradition—each year the St. Mary’s Knights host a Thanksgiving weekend girls basketball invitational tournament. Teams playing on Friday, Nov. 25 and Saturday, Nov. 26 included Sleepy Eye Public, BOLD, Cleveland and host St. Mary’s.
We had our daughters and their families over on Saturday for our family Thanksgiving. The highlight was that I got everyone to pose for a lovely family photo—all smiling, no eyes closed, and no whining about my request (they’d been for-warned). Somehow, without even talking about it, we were also slightly color coordinated. The food, a second Thanksgiving for all (so we had lasagna), was very good and the company was even better.
(Randy’s New Ulm Journal column, Weeds, published courtesy of The Journal.) The 1993 film, “The Sandlot” is a humorous coming-of-age story about a group of boys learning life lessons playing pickup baseball games on a sandlot in Los Angeles. Through a series of misjudgments, a Babe Ruth autographed ball ends up in the yard of a fierce dog.
I am writing this the day after Thanksgiving — this marks the unofficial beginning of the Christmas season. Lights are going up, special sales are being promised, and end of December plans are being made.

The Sleepy Eye Public School 5th graders and St. Mary's 6th graders attended Junior Achievement's BizTown in St. Paul on Nov. 15. They worked hard before they left as they learned how to balance a checkbook, interviewed for a job, and learned how to run a business. On the day of the trip, the students all had a job and had to successfully make a profit for their business. Students also had a chance to visit other businesses and spend money to help the town's economy. Overall the students had a wonderful trip. The Sleepy Eye Lions Club paid for transportation to BizTown. Submitted
