Miller at Aquatennial in Minneapolis this week

Like a long line of Miss Sleepy Eye queens before her, Miss Sleepy Eye 2021 Leah Miller is representing Sleepy Eye in the Minneapolis Aquatennial Ambassador Candidate Program this week. After a busy week as the Stage Manager and a dancer in Sleepy Eye Community Theater’s “West Side Story,” Leah had only a couple days to catch her breath and prepare for the Aquatennial before she arrived there on Wednesday morning.

Stark Rookies win championship

The Stark Rookies Baseball team traveled to Springfield on July 9 for the end of the year league tournament. In the first game of the day, the Longhorns defeated Sleepy Eye 3-0, moving them into the semifinals. In game two they matched up with Redwood Falls, coming out on top, 6-4. This put them into the championship game against Godahl. They finished the tournament with a very nice 9-2 victory. The team finished the year with a record of 15-1. The team is coached by Adam Fischer, Matt Mathiowetz, John Pelzel, and Chad Armbruster. Last week on Thursday and Friday, the historical society had a food stand fundraiser. I am on the board and volunteered on Thursday afternoon. Even though we took a two-year pandemic break from this project, it turned out we still knew how to do it. It was very hot those days, but we think we did pretty good, and appreciate everyone who patronized our stand.

“West Side Story” opens tonight

Praying for God’s Peace and Justice

St. Mary’s Catholic Church Just last week, on July 4th, we heard about what is now being called the 309th “mass shooting” this year in our country. It took place in Highland Park, an affluent Chicago suburb, previously considered “one of the safest towns in the country.” During a 4th of July parade, a 22-year-old male described as an “amateur rapper” opened fire on a crowd gathered for the event.

Mavis Jean Warling

Mavis Jean Warling, 76, of Springfield passed away on May 16, 2022. Mavis was born July 13, 1945 in St. James. A devout Christian, she was baptized at East Sveadahl Lutheran Church, and was confirmed at Augustana Lutheran Church, St. James.
