Did you know that Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a leading cause of death in the United States, claiming approximately many lives each year? COPD causes many hospitalizations and hospital emergency room visits. COPD includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema – lung diseases which frequently coexist and are characterized by obstruction to air flow, making it difficult to breathe. Smokers are particularly at risk of developing COPD. However, it has also been linked to workplace exposure to dust and fumes. Symptoms include chronic cough, increased mucus production, chest tightness, shortness of breath and difficulty breathing.

Sleepy Eye 14U wins Southern Star Tournament

The Sleepy Eye 14U Softball Team won the 16 team Southern Star Tournament in Mankato over the past weekend. On Saturday they defeated Blue Earth 15-0, MCW 7-1 and Marshall 13-0. On Sunday they lost to Kasson-Mantorville 0-1 in extra innings sending them to the losers bracket. Then they beat Lake Crystal 9-3 to get back to the championship bracket against Kasson-Mantorville where they had to win twice.

Stark Mites win league tournament

The Stark Mites Baseball team traveled to Wabasso for the end of the year league tournament on Saturday and Sunday, July 16 and 17. In the first game Saturday, the Longhorns defeated Springfield 5-1, moving them to the next round of the winner’s bracket. In game two they matched up with Windom, coming out on top, 3-1. This kept them in the winners’ bracket going into Sunday.

Hoffmann named ACTE Region III Teacher of the Year

Mary Hoffmann, Sleepy Eye Ag. Teacher, was named ACTE Region III Teacher of the Year this summer. She received this award at the Region III ACTE Conference in Des Moines, Iowa. ACTE is the Association of Career and Technical Education. ACTE is the largest national education association of thriving professionals dedicated to the advancement of education that prepares youth and adults for successful careers. Our members represent all facets of career and technical education (CTE).
