Kids are wild about wildlife at the library

Minnesota DNR Naturalist Scott Kudelka presented a special program called “Wild about Wildlife” to children at the Dyckman Free Library Friday morning, June 10. In this photo he is talking to the kids about coyotes as a volunteer carries a coyote fur around for the children to touch. SEU golfers at State this week

Seven Sleepy Eye United golfers played in the Class A State Golf Tournament on Tuesday and Wednesday this week at Pebble Creek Golf Club in Becker. The girls team of Liz Schwint, Meriden Andres, Sam Price, Chloe Walter, Jaci Domeier and Kiara Murphy, along with individual qualifier on the boys team, Carson Erickson, played in hot conditions Tuesday.

Wildcats have great State Meet!

Wednesday afternoon, June 8, the River Valley Wildcats track team members competing in the Class A State Tournament got a fire truck escort as they left for the St. Michael-Albertville High School track. They had practice time Wednesday before the State Meet which included preliminaries in some events on Thursday and finals on Friday.

GREAT JOB WILDCATS!

The River Valley Wildcats, athletes and coaches, had a Sleepy Eye Fire Department ride through town as they left for the State Meet on June 8. Deb Moldaschel Toby and James Hagen competed in the 100 and 200 meter dashes, shot put, and Toby also in discus at the State Meet.

City approves additional body cameras for police

Last week in his column, Police Chief Matt Andres wrote about how well the use of body cameras was going for the police officers. He mentioned that recent donations would allow the purchase of two more body cameras so that each officer would have their own. As the final piece of action at the City Council meeting on Tuesday, June 14, Andres received council approval to place the order for two body cameras.

Education Beat: Stopping the Slide

Summer is a time for kids to kick back, take a break from routine, and enjoy lazy days. It also, in many cases, is when learning loss- aka “The Summer Slide” can take place. Summer setbacks are nothing new regarding academics and the phenomenon has been researched by educators since the beginning of time. On average, student achievement can decline over the summer by up to a third of a prior year’s learning gains. Loss is usually greater in mathematics than reading, and higher grade leveled students are more noticeably affected than younger learners. The summer slide can be measured in both social skills and classroom discipline, in addition to academics.
