A mid-summer update from SEFAC

As I write this article, we have had a stretch of hot and humid days. So, first and foremost I want to thank the 28 lifeguards for their hard work and dedication to helping us provide a pool for all of you. Also, a shout out to Matt Week of June 19, 2022 Schmidt and the Park and Rec Dept. for all the entral South Nort time they have put into making sure that the pool is working properly and looking great! As well as everyone at the city office for all you do behind the scenes to help make the pool run th Metro smoothly.

Sleepy Eye FFA members attend Timberland Leadership Camp

Twenty-six Sleepy Eye FFA members traveled to Sibley State Park, near New London, from June 6 to 9. Sleepy Eye FFA Advisors, Mary Hoffmann, Katie Emmett, and Paul Hendrickx; Camp Assistants, Morgan Hoffmann and Katelyn Capacia; along with several members from the Tracy and Marshall FFA chapters, attended the camp.

Dahms and Torkelson provide legislative update

On June 16, Senator Gary Dahms and Representative Paul Torkelson started their day of meetings in their districts at the Sleepy Eye Event Center. The two state legislators spoke to about a dozen citizens about the recently completed Minnesota Legislative Session.

As a member of the Sleepy Eye 150th Anniversary committee, Kathy Krenz offered to organize a car and tractor show to be held during the Sleepy Eye Summerfest celebration. It’s a project she’s organized a few times previously and was happy to bring back for Sleepy Eye.

St. John’s Lutheran Church welcomes new pastor

St. John’s Lutheran Church had a special service on Sunday, June 5 with the installation of Pastor Tim Berg. Pastor Berg and his family have moved to Sleepy Eye from Rapid City, S.D. and are getting settled in to life in Sleepy Eye.

Knights are Section 2A Runner Up

After their victory over the Indians on Tuesday, June 7, at ISG Field in Mankato, the Knights had another game that night as they worked their way out of the elimination bracket of the Section 2A playoffs with a win over Martin County West.

Kayaks, paddleboards can be rented at SE Lake

A new recreation opportunity is available at Sleepy Eye Lake with the arrival of the Kayak and Paddleboard rental station last week. The equipment, which includes stand up paddleboards and single or two-person kayaks, with paddles and life vests, is in a trailer at Sportsmen’s Park Campground. The equipment is rented through the City of Sleepy Eye website in two-hour time slots. The sign on the trailer provides the website address to provide rental opportunities for those who want to rent when they are at the park.

Chief Sleepy Eye statue shines again

The statue of Chief Sleepy Eye in Wooldrik Park (by the post office) was restored over the weekend. An anonymous donor arranged for the restoration through Brodin Studios of Kimball. The processes of restoration include sand blasting, repatination, and clear coating to help restore the statue to its original coloring.
