Despite the tornado warnings, we had a fabulous Open House last week! It was such a joy to showcase our beautiful library, I think Mr. Dyckman would approve of our care and continued use of this public institution he donated to the citizens of Sleepy Eye.

The Sleepy Eye FFA Chapter held its Awards Program on Sunday, May 1. It was a great opportunity to honor the members and chapter leaders, as well as the major supporters for the chapter throughout the year.
People concerned about water quality and soil health in Brown County should consider filing by May 31 to run for the position of supervisor of the Brown Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD). Supervisors play an important role in how a wide variety of natural resources are managed in our county, including wetlands, rivers, lakes and farmland.
Auditions for Prairie Fire Children’s Theatre’s original musical adaptation of Sleeping Beauty will be held Monday, May 30 at 1 p.m. at the Sleepy Eye High School Auditorium.
St. Mary’s 6th, 7th and 8th graders recently took a trip to St. Paul and toured the Minnesota History Center, St. Paul Cathedral and Minnesota State Capitol. Highlights of the trip were the interactive exhibits at the History Center, the beauty and architecture of the Cathedral, and touring the Capitol building. Last fall, the Catholic elementary schools in the Diocese of New Ulm were offered a Challenge Matching Grant of $25,000 from the Richard Schulze Family Foundation. Schulze, the founder of Best Buy, has as one of his foundation’s focuses the support of Catholic education. The schools, including St. Mary’s School, were successful in reaching the challenge of raising $25,000 in new donations to match the grant by the end of 2021.
Among the events that are part of Sleepy Eye’s 150th Anniversary celebration this summer is a casual All Schools Reunion planned for the weekend of Sleepy Eye Summerfest—on Friday evening, Aug. 19 at the Sleepy Eye Brewing Company. The All Schools Reunion is for anyone with ties to Sleepy Eye Public or St. Mary’s school: former students, graduates, staff, and friends alike.
This past weekend, the Minnesota Republican Party held their state convention at the Mayo Convention Center in Rochester and endorsed candidates for several offices. Receiving the endorsement for Governor and Lt. Governor were Dr. Scott Jensen and his chosen running mate, [former Viking] Matt Birk.
