Mayor’s Message

Our ongoing search for restaurants that would fit in Sleepy Eye seems to have some light glowing at the end of this long tunnel. Our EDA is bringing Johnny Vuong to Sleepy Eye to offer his top quality Chinese food, Monday, April 23, for lunch at the Community Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Johnny owns the Chinese Home Café in Truman and has been very successful there. We have been conferring with him for a number of months and he likes Sleepy Eye. This introduction to Sleepy Eye seems like a good way for the community and Johnny to get to know one another. He would come each Monday into the future. Let’s hope this opportunity turns into something positive for the community.

Library Director Sleepy Eye is celebrating 150 years of history so please mark your calendars as the library will have an Open House on Wednesday, May 11 from 3 to 7 p.m. In May of 1901 the Dyckman Free Library was officially turned over by Mr. Francis H. Dyckman to the citizens of Sleepy Eye. Mr. Dyckman had stipulated thatthe library should be named “The Prairie Free Library,” free in that there would be no membership or subscription required to access books. The citizens of Sleepy Eye voted to instead name the library after its generous benefactor. It was the first public library in Brown County and is currently the oldest original library building still in use as a library in Minnesota. The corner stone of the library was laid September 12, 1900.
